A young boy is in critical condition after an incident where he was pulled along by a train for a distance.
The incident took place at a railway station in North Melbourne, Australia, on Monday, May 11, around 4 pm. The Year 7 student’s backpack got caught between train carriages while he was on the platform, as he was reportedly trying to retrieve his phone. This resulted in him being struck by the train, dragged several meters, and trapped under it in front of shocked commuters, including fellow students.
Emergency responders from Fire and Rescue Victoria used a hydraulic jack to lift the train and free the boy, who suffered serious lower body injuries. The rescue operation lasted between 45 minutes to an hour.
Following the extrication, the boy was attended to by eight paramedics before being urgently transported to Royal Children’s Hospital due to his critical condition. He will undergo treatment for severe lower leg injuries, with Ambulance Victoria describing the scene as highly distressing.
Paramedic Alex Hemsley commended the swift and thorough response of the emergency team, emphasizing the high level of care provided to the injured boy during what she described as one of the most traumatic incidents of his life.
Counseling services are being provided to support the first responders dealing with the aftermath of the incident. The principal of St Aloysius College, the boy’s school, reached out to students and parents via email to offer assistance and express concern for the student involved.
While specific details about the student’s condition are limited, paramedics are optimistic about his chances of a full recovery, as reported by Seven News.
