“Britain Vows Action Against Russian Shadow Fleet”

Date:

Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow vessels that are funding Vladimir Putin’s military activities, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to strengthen efforts to monitor Russia’s clandestine fleet, a network of deteriorating oil tankers using false flags to avoid Western sanctions. Cooper emphasized the need for more decisive actions against these covert ships, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for military operations in Ukraine and causing harm to critical undersea cables.

Although no British personnel have physically boarded these vessels yet, British forces supported the US in a bold operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia last month, accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. Officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military intervention.

During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper toured a patrol vessel and met with Finnish Border Guard members who defend against Russian threats along Finland’s extensive border. She highlighted a previous raid by the Turva patrol ship on a Russia-associated vessel accused of disrupting undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland. The Fitburg cargo vessel, sailing under the flag of St Vincent and Grenadines, was allegedly en route from St. Petersburg to Haifa, Israel.

In an interview with the Mirror, the Foreign Secretary expressed concerns about the Russian shadow fleet’s activities in British waters, stressing the need for a more forceful response to counter these actions. When asked about the possibility of seizing ships, Ms. Cooper indicated readiness for enforcement operations while emphasizing the importance of collaborating with international partners to exert greater pressure on the shadow fleet.

Ms. Cooper also advocated for a complete ban on the shipment of Russian oil to cut off a crucial revenue source for Moscow. She highlighted the UK’s monitoring of enforcement actions by European allies against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and off the French coast.

The visit also included a demonstration of how Finnish Border Guards handle vessel seizures, showcasing tactics involving armed personnel descending from helicopters to secure ships. The effectiveness of recent raids and crew arrests in deterring illicit activities was noted, with Finland having the authority to intervene forcefully against rogue vessels when necessary.

The escalating presence of Russian vessels near the UK in recent years has raised concerns, with Defense Secretary John Healey issuing warnings in response to incidents like the Yantar, a Russian spy ship, engaging in provocative actions. Ms. Cooper underscored the UK’s commitment to tightening control over the Russian shadow fleet and disrupting Putin’s operations to safeguard national security interests in British waters.

Furthermore, the Foreign Secretary engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb as part of a regional tour focusing on security issues in the Arctic Circle. The heightened attention to security in the High North follows concerns raised by President Trump regarding potential annexation of Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
