A British couple is facing a decade-long imprisonment in Iran on charges of espionage. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, hailing from Sussex, were handed a 10-year sentence by Iranian authorities, which they vehemently deny. The couple was apprehended in 2025 during a global motorcycle journey through the country.
The Foreman family expressed dismay at the harsh sentence, criticizing the incarceration conditions at Evin prison in Tehran as “unjustifiable,” according to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The couple is confined to cramped 8×4 cells in the notorious prison, sharing space with over a dozen inmates and sleeping on rat-infested floors.
Joe Bennett, Ms. Foreman’s son, revealed that the living conditions were dire, with overcrowded cells and inadequate bedding. He reported unsanitary cooking areas and a lack of basic necessities in the prison. Despite protests and unrest in Iran, the Foremans have endured harsh treatment during their 13-month pre-sentencing detention, surrounded by squalor and violence.
While the verdict was unwelcome, Mr. Bennett sees it as a potential catalyst for progress in their case, hoping to pave the way for their release. The UK government, though criticized by the Foreman family for inaction, has condemned the sentencing and pledged to secure the couple’s return.
Foreign Secretary Cooper affirmed the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office’s commitment to pursuing the case vigorously until the Foremans are safely repatriated. The couple is held separately in different wings of the prison, where human rights groups have documented cases of torture and inhumane treatment among the diverse inmate population, including journalists and political detainees.
