“British Doctor Rescued from Hantavirus Outbreak on Stranded Cruise Ship”

Date:

A British physician rescued from the stranded cruise ship following a deadly Hantavirus outbreak is reported to be in a “serious condition” but deemed ‘stable’. The virus, which claimed the lives of three passengers, is suspected to have been brought onto the ship by a Dutch couple who had engaged in bird watching activities. The couple, who fell ill four days into the cruise and later succumbed to the virus, had recently traveled to Argentina before embarking on the bird watching excursion in Ushuaia.

Authorities in Argentina investigating the outbreak believe that the Dutch couple contracted the virus during their bird-watching excursion, possibly from rodents carrying the infection at a landfill they visited. Prior to this incident, Ushuaia and the surrounding Tierra del Fuego province had no reported cases of Hantavirus, which is typically more prevalent in rural areas.

Among the passengers onboard the ship sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde, 19 were British nationals along with four British crew members. Eight individuals have been exposed to the virus, resulting in three fatalities, three individuals in critical condition, one asymptomatic person, and one person testing positive for the virus after disembarkation. Notably, the 69-year-old British passenger remains in intensive care in Johannesburg.

Recently, three individuals, including the British doctor, were medically evacuated from the ship and airlifted to a medical facility in the Netherlands. The evacuations were prompted by the outbreak of the Hantavirus onboard. The ship had been on a five-week voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde, with passengers enjoying sightings of rare dolphins and birds before reaching Tristan Da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island globally.

Amidst the crisis, concerns were raised about the management of the situation onboard the ship, with passengers expressing frustration over the handling of the outbreak. The doctor and other infected individuals were finally evacuated after several days, with plans in place for repatriation and quarantine measures.

Oceanwide Expeditions, the cruise operator, responded to the situation, stating that proper procedures were followed and the cause of the initial death was unknown at the time of the announcement. The company also reassured that necessary health and safety protocols were adhered to while onboard.

As the situation unfolds, global health authorities are closely monitoring the outbreak, emphasizing that the public health risk remains low. Efforts are underway to repatriate non-Spanish passengers while Spanish nationals will undergo quarantine in Madrid. Passengers onboard the ship are advised to remain in their cabins and follow safety protocols.

In response to the crisis, governments are coordinating efforts to ensure the safe return of affected individuals and prevent further spread of the virus. Foreign authorities are actively engaged in supporting British nationals onboard and facilitating their safe return home.
