A British engineering company based in the UK has gone into administration, putting numerous airport jobs at risk. Wallace McDowall Limited, mainly operating from Glasgow Prestwick Airport, appointed administrators on May 28, as per official filings. Established in 1969, the company specialized in engineering and metalwork manufacturing, becoming a significant local employer. Services offered included welding, component assembly, finishing, machining, design, and laser cutting.
The decision to enter administration followed a period of uncertainty, marked by the company’s rebranding to WMCD Realisations 2026 Ltd and an internal memo warning staff of potential collapse. Despite this, the company assured operations would continue while management sought the best outcome.
Various businesses across the UK are struggling to survive due to mounting costs linked to taxation and global conflicts like the situation in Iran, with manufacturing and engineering sectors facing significant challenges. Recently, two other Scottish companies, AIM Engineering & Fabrication Group and Hescott Engineering Company, also faced administration, resulting in 93 job losses.
Alistair McAlinden, the joint administrator for these companies, attributed the situation to ongoing turmoil in the construction and engineering supply chain, citing rising costs, shrinking margins, and the loss of key contracts as primary factors. Additionally, Denby, a renowned British ceramics maker, also entered administration due to soaring expenses, particularly high energy prices.
Tom Russell, president of the restructuring professionals trade group R3, highlighted the tough economic conditions businesses are facing, with escalating energy and fuel costs coupled with cautious consumer spending posing significant challenges, especially for financially constrained businesses.
