A British expatriate was tragically slain following a heated dispute with another individual during the early morning hours, as per the authorities. Luke Kellett-Smith, aged 34, was socializing on December 28 when Benard Emeka Oneh allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation with him around 1:20 am. The victim, a native of Woking who had relocated to Toronto in 2019, was struck twice, causing him to collapse outside a venue in the city. After the second blow, Luke lost consciousness and succumbed to his injuries three days later on New Year’s Eve.
Emeka Oneh, aged 30, was apprehended on the same day and accused of the assault. Initially charged with aggravated assault, the suspect, hailing from Richmond Hill, had the charge elevated to manslaughter by the Toronto Police Service on Monday.
The fatal argument and assault transpired at Front Street West and University Avenue. Authorities mentioned that the suspect fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended later that day.
Oneh was slated to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday. Details about the relationship between the two men or the events leading to the alleged attack remain undisclosed.
Friends and family of Luke paid heartfelt tributes to the adventurous and sociable Brit. His best friend, Jack Elton, described Luke as someone who embraced life to the fullest, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Luke, the eldest of three brothers, tragically lost a sibling previously. His other brother, Matt, who plays for Horndean FC, also expressed condolences, stating, “As a club, we send our love to the family, friends and loved ones of Luke.”
A GoFundMe page has been established by Luke’s loved ones to facilitate his repatriation to the UK, amassing over £27,000 in donations. The fundraiser aims to support Luke’s parents in bringing him back to Woking for a final resting place alongside his late brother James, offering solace amidst their unimaginable loss.
