Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight champion, sustained more severe injuries than initially believed following a tragic car accident in Nigeria. The incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway outside Lagos when Joshua’s black Lexus Jeep collided with a stationary red commercial Sinotruck on Monday morning. Although Joshua suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized, the crash resulted in the tragic loss of his close friends, Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria promptly shared their preliminary findings, stating that the crash involved a black Lexus Jeep and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck. Out of the five adult males involved, two lost their lives, one sustained injuries, and two escaped unharmed. The injured individual received medical attention, while the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu, for further procedures by the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division.
Despite initial reports of minor injuries, concerns have arisen about Joshua’s condition being more serious than anticipated. Sources close to the former heavyweight champion expressed fears of potential rib and knee injuries. A video circulating on social media showed Ayodele playing table tennis with Joshua shortly before the accident, highlighting the sudden and tragic turn of events. Condolences poured in following the incident, with Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn leading tributes to the departed individuals.
In a statement, Matchroom Boxing confirmed the passing of personal trainer Latz and strength and conditioning coach Ghami, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Joshua, who sustained injuries in the accident, is reported to be in stable condition under observation at the hospital. The boxing community mourns the loss of the two team members and extends sympathies to their families and friends during this challenging time.
