Mystery shrouds the unexpected passing of a 25-year-old British man who died in Thailand following a night out. Liam White, a joiner from Maghull in Merseyside, was residing at a hostel in Bangkok at the time of his demise. The night before his body was discovered at Hostel 24 Backpackers 50 in Bang Chak, Bangkok on January 13, Mr. White had been out, as revealed in an inquest held on Wednesday.
An official report from the inquest held at Bootle Town Hall indicated that Mr. White had made a reservation at the hostel three days prior and was sharing a dormitory with several individuals. Subsequent to his passing, two post mortems were conducted, each providing conflicting opinions on the cause of his death, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The post mortem conducted in Thailand concluded that Mr. White’s demise was due to natural causes – cardiac failure in conjunction with infective pneumonia, as outlined in the inquest report penned by assistant coroner Elizabeth Wheeler. Conversely, a post mortem in the UK classified his cause of death as undetermined.
Elizabeth Wheeler noted, “The Thai post mortem mentioned the presence of cerebral oedema and brain haemorrhage, without explaining why these were not attributed to the cause of death. It highlighted an ‘enlarged’ heart, whereas the UK pathologist considered the heart to be within normal parameters. Furthermore, the UK post mortem did not detect any signs of lung infection, as reported in the Thai post mortem.”
She added, “The Thai post mortem documented the detection of morphine and codeine in the bloodstream, though the concentrations were unspecified. These substances can have an additive effect and lead to respiratory depression, particularly in the presence of a chest infection.”
Due to the discrepancies and uncertainties in the medical findings, a definitive determination regarding the cause of Mr. White’s passing could not be reached. Consequently, the circumstances surrounding his death remain inconclusive. Ms. Wheeler recorded an open conclusion.
Mr. White’s funeral reportedly took place at West Lancashire Crematorium in Burscough on January 31 following his repatriation. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated post his demise, amassing £5,000 to aid his family in covering repatriation expenses.
