The son of a British father detained on charges of espionage in Iran is worried about his father’s health after facing a severe medical issue. Craig Foreman and his wife Lindsay, residents of East Sussex, have been imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison for 15 months out of a 10-year sentence following a conviction in a controversial trial without a chance to defend themselves on February 17. The couple, a psychologist Lindsay and a carpenter Craig, were on a world tour riding motorbikes when they were apprehended, cutting off all communication with their families and leaving their loved ones in the dark about their well-being.
Throughout their ordeal, Lindsay’s sons Joe Bennett, 31, and Toby Rutland, 19, along with Craig’s children Kieran, 27, and Chelsea Foreman, 30, have been actively advocating for their release. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has cautioned British citizens and British-Iranian dual nationals of the substantial risk of arrest, questioning, and detention in Iran, advising against travel to the country due to escalated tensions.
Joe, residing in Folkestone, Kent, disclosed to The Mirror that his stepfather’s health has deteriorated dangerously due to an untreated tooth abscess, posing a serious threat to his life without proper medical attention. Urgency is emphasized as untreated abscesses, particularly tooth abscesses, can escalate quickly, leading to life-threatening conditions like sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis.
Despite the distressing situation, there was a glimmer of hope for Lindsay and Craig as the UK Government publicly declared them as ‘innocent tourists’. In a parliamentary session on April 21, Sir Iain Duncan Smith highlighted the couple’s harsh conditions in Iran, demanding official recognition of their innocence, which Minister Hamish Falconer acknowledged as a grave injustice.
Richard Ratcliffe, the spouse of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, previously detained in Iran, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for concrete actions to bring the Foremans back home swiftly. He speculated that behind-the-scenes developments might be underway given the UK Government’s recent stance, drawing parallels with successful hostage repatriations by France from Iran and suggesting that ongoing diplomatic talks amidst regional tensions could play a pivotal role.
Amid the ongoing turmoil, Joe expressed the challenges faced by Lindsay and Craig, recounting a harrowing incident where a bomb explosion near their location during a phone call left them shaken. The family continues to push for support and actions to secure Lindsay and Craig’s release, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts and international intervention in resolving the situation.
An FCDO spokesperson reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to assisting Lindsay and Craig, highlighting diplomatic efforts to ensure their safe return to the UK. Lindsay and Craig’s family has urged supporters to sign a petition for their release and contribute to fundraising efforts through GoFundMe.
