“British Tourists’ Tragic Deaths in Cape Verde Spark Legal Action”

Date:

Four British tourists have tragically passed away within four months due to an illness they contracted while vacationing in Cape Verde, according to lawyers. Since 2023, a total of six British individuals have lost their lives after visiting the West African islands.

The deceased individuals include Elena Walsh, 64, from Birmingham, Karen Pooley, 64, from Gloucestershire, Mark Ashley, 55, from Bedfordshire, and an unnamed 56-year-old man from Chester. They all succumbed to a severe gastric illness during their stay in Cape Verde.

Elena Walsh, who booked a £5,000 holiday package with Tui alongside her family, fell ill shortly after arrival and tragically passed away. Initially diagnosed with appendicitis, she later suffered a heart attack during surgery and never regained consciousness, with heart failure cited as the primary cause of death.

Similarly, Karen Pooley, Mark Ashley, and the unnamed victim also faced similar circumstances, including gastroenteritis complications, broken bones, and heart failure, leading to their untimely deaths in the months following Walsh’s passing.

Representatives from Irwin Mitchell, who are supporting the grieving families, revealed that these four individuals are part of a group of six Britons who have died after their trips to Cape Verde since January 2023, with ongoing investigations into the incidents.

Mark Ashley fell ill within days of arriving in Cape Verde, experiencing symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Despite reporting his illness while still on holiday, his condition worsened upon returning to the UK, leading to his sudden death.

Karen Pooley, who was staying at the Riu Funana resort, also fell ill during her trip, suffering from gastric symptoms that eventually escalated, resulting in her demise. Her husband, Andy, expressed profound sadness over the loss of his wife, describing her as a kind-hearted individual who brought joy to everyone around her.

The families of all six victims are pursuing legal action against Tui for damages, as concerns grow over the repeated illness outbreaks and hygiene issues at Cape Verde hotels. Irwin Mitchell emphasized the need for improved hygiene standards and safety regulations on the islands to prevent further tragedies.

Tui has been approached for comment on the matter.
