In an incident captured on CCTV, bystanders intervened to halt a former math teacher’s violent knife assault. Azzeddine Mahmoudi received a two-and-a-half-year sentence at Southampton Crown Court after admitting to multiple charges, including unlawful wounding, affray, and possession of a bladed weapon. The footage shows Mahmoudi wielding a knife outside an Aldi store, targeting individuals before being confronted by members of the public.
During the altercation, two individuals sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, with Mahmoudi attempting to harm five others. As he roamed with a kitchen knife, courageous citizens redirected him away from crowded areas until police arrived. Upon intervention by law enforcement, Mahmoudi was subdued with spray and apprehended, with a second blade found in his possession.
The initial victim suffered cuts to the head and arm, while the second victim sustained hand injuries during the August 3 incident. Authorities revealed that Mahmoudi, a resident of Southampton, had been grappling with mental health challenges for an extended period. During sentencing, Judge William Mousley KC condemned Mahmoudi’s actions for causing widespread panic and distress among the public.
Detective Constable Ryan Mitchell praised the swift actions of the bystanders, emphasizing their bravery in preventing further harm before law enforcement’s arrival. The incident, which unfolded on a sunny afternoon, could have resulted in more severe consequences if not for the courageous intervention of those present.
