Tyler Fulton, the president of the Canadian Cattle Association, highlighted the longstanding presence of Australian beef in the market, particularly in the realm of steak cuts.
Fulton explained that various factors contribute to the pricing gap, including the leaner nature of Australian beef due to its grass-based production model. He noted that Canadian preferences lean towards beef with more marbling, which is not typically found in Australian beef. Additionally, retailers are employing a ‘loss leader’ strategy to promote Australian beef.
The increased availability of Australian beef in Canada stems from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) implemented in 2018, granting Australia expanded access to the Canadian market. While acknowledging the benefits of imported beef to address short-term supply gaps, Fulton emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality standards in the Canadian beef industry.
Consumer sentiments vary, with some, like shopper Karen Novak, opting for more affordable alternatives due to the high cost of Canadian beef. However, others, such as Jordan Fieseler and Larry Evans, are open to trying Australian beef if prices continue to rise.
Loblaws, in response to inquiries, emphasized its commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers a range of choices. Fulton expressed confidence in the growth prospects of the domestic beef sector, highlighting recent positive trends in profitability and herd expansion.
