Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later clinched bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medals to four and five, respectively, in the competition.
Ruck, a 26-year-old from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, coming second to American Gretchen Walsh. Australian Alexandria Perkins took the bronze with a time of 56.75.
Reflecting on her success in the 100m butterfly, Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her preparation and performance. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final.
McIntosh took full responsibility for her misjudgment in the morning heats, expressing her frustration and determination to learn from the experience. Despite the setback, McIntosh managed to secure a gold in the 400m individual medley.
In the men’s events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, who also won the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the competition, highlighted the significance of his training in achieving success.
Ruck further added to her medal tally by guiding Canada to a bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. The U.S. and Australia claimed gold and silver, respectively, in the same event.
While the women’s relay team succeeded, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium finish, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
