Caregiver sentenced for swindling blind ex-serviceman

Date:

A 32-year-old caregiver from Basford, Nottingham, was sentenced to 16 months in prison for deceitfully taking over £30,000 from a blind and bedridden ex-serviceman to fund personal expenses, including purchases on OnlyFans, jewelry, and airsoft gear. The perpetrator, Ash Morningstar, admitted to transferring funds from the victim’s account to his own over a 10-month period.

Nottingham Crown Court condemned Morningstar’s actions as a calculated and heartless exploitation of a vulnerable individual. The victim, a former serviceman in his late 70s, trusted Morningstar, who abused his position as a caregiver to carry out the fraud. The court highlighted the moral depravity of profiting from someone who had served their country and was nearing the end of their life.

Mark Knowles, the prosecutor, revealed that Morningstar, employed by Ardent Care, misused his role to make unauthorized transactions, including payments to fast-food chains and retail stores. The victim, registered as blind and bed-bound, was unaware of the illicit activities until his social worker noticed suspicious financial activities and reported them to the authorities.

The victim, who had no family and was in a fragile physical state, expressed deep disappointment and mistrust toward the perpetrator upon learning of the deceit. He had intended to donate his remaining funds to animal charities, underscoring the emotional toll of the betrayal.

Morningstar pleaded guilty to fraud by abusing his position, emphasizing that he did not initially plan to defraud the victim. His defense attorney, Julia King, acknowledged the breach of trust and expressed Morningstar’s remorse for his actions. Despite the regrettable incident, Morningstar is now in a committed relationship and is expecting a child.

The court’s decision reflects the severity of financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals and serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding trust and integrity in caregiving roles.
