Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when adding new apps to their devices as a popular tool called “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, potentially paving the way for a scam app targeting unsuspecting users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace over the weekend has raised concerns among Fire TV owners who have relied on the tool for nearly a decade. Downloader allowed users to search for and install apps not available through official channels, a feature particularly useful for accessing region-specific apps or early software versions.
The app’s developer, Elias Saba, disclosed that Downloader faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update that mistakenly classified it as a web browser, violating Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices. Saba has swiftly addressed this issue by removing the browser identification in the latest update, hoping for Amazon’s prompt approval to reinstate the app on the Appstore.
In the interim, users are urged to remain vigilant as a counterfeit version of Downloader has emerged, aiming to deceive Fire TV owners into paying a weekly fee. Saba emphasized the importance of avoiding this fraudulent app and reporting it to Amazon to prevent financial loss.
For current Downloader users, it is advised not to uninstall the legitimate app as reinstallation may not be possible until Amazon resolves the issue. Additionally, users should disable Auto Offload in device settings to prevent automatic removal of the app.
Pending Amazon’s approval, Downloader could make a comeback on Fire TV devices later in the week, necessitating users to stay informed about any developments.
