Chainsaw-Wielding Man Killed by Police in NSW Spree

Date:

In a tumultuous series of events, a man was fatally shot by police following a violent incident where a woman was stabbed during a spree that involved breaking into multiple residences and carjacking a vehicle. The man, armed with a chainsaw and knife, forcibly entered a woman’s residence on the morning of February 6.

The unfolding of these events led to a critical incident investigation in the early hours in New South Wales, Australia. Authorities responded to a report of a home invasion on Heath Avenue, Tuncurry, located just over three hours from Sydney.

Upon arrival, police were informed that a woman had been stabbed, and the suspect had fled the scene in a white four-wheel drive vehicle. Subsequently, officers found a 28-year-old woman with severe injuries at the scene. She received medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle led police to a nearby area where they initiated a chase. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed on Forster Bridge after driving through a sports ground. Despite locating the vehicle, the suspect managed to carjack another vehicle, leading to a collision with a police vehicle and resulting in minor injuries to an officer.

The chase continued to Idlewood Drive in Rainbow Flat, where the suspect entered a residence while still armed with a knife and attempted to steal yet another vehicle. After exiting the home, the suspect engaged with police, prompting officers to use a taser in an effort to apprehend him. However, the suspect evaded capture and fled to another property.

Despite multiple attempts to subdue the armed suspect with a taser, he made a threatening advance towards an officer, prompting the officer to discharge their firearm. The suspect received immediate medical attention from law enforcement but was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, believed to be 41 years old, has yet to be formally identified.

A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will spearhead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation will undergo scrutiny by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
