A mother in difficult circumstances shared her experience of turning to food banks to provide for her children when they were younger, following alarming new data highlighting the extent of child food poverty. According to a report by the Education Policy Institute (EPI), nearly a quarter of households with children under five in England face food poverty, with preschoolers experiencing higher levels of food insecurity than older children.
Meg Bonnie, a mother of two from Nottingham, has been on Universal Credit since she turned 18 in 2023. The 21-year-old receives approximately £800 per month in benefits for her four-year-old and one-year-old children and has previously relied on food banks to feed her family.
Expressing her reaction to the concerning statistics, she mentioned feeling a sense of shame and judgment when accessing food banks in the past. She emphasized that while she hasn’t needed assistance for a while, managing a budget, especially during the summer holidays, remains challenging for single-parent households like hers.
Meg highlighted the importance of free or affordable meal options for children during school breaks and shared her strategy of meal prepping to stay within a budget. She noted the rising cost of food, necessitating careful spending decisions like opting for cheaper alternatives such as store-brand products.
The government’s recent initiatives to lift the two-child benefits cap and increase funding for nurseries aim to alleviate child poverty. A government spokesperson emphasized the commitment to reducing child poverty through measures such as removing the two-child limit, raising the national living wage, and expanding free school meal eligibility for families on Universal Credit. Plans are also underway to provide additional support to nurseries and childminders assisting low-income families, including consultations to gather feedback and improve assistance.
By prioritizing support for families in need, the government aims to address the challenges faced by vulnerable households and ensure that no child lacks essential nutrition for a healthy start in life.
