“Children’s Author Sentenced to Life for Husband’s Murder”

Date:

A mother, who authored a book for kids dealing with grief following her spouse’s passing, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her husband. Kouri Richins, aged 36, was found guilty of poisoning her 39-year-old husband, Eric Richins, with a fentanyl-laced drink at their residence near Park City, Utah, in March 2022. The court convicted Richins of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, fraud, and forgery after evidence showed she had previously attempted to poison her husband with a fentanyl-laced sandwich.

Prosecutors revealed that Richins, facing significant debt in her house-flipping business, harbored plans to start a new life with another partner. She had taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, aiming to inherit his substantial estate valued at over $4 million upon his demise.

On the day that would have been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday, Kouri Richins received a life sentence at the Summit County Courthouse. She was apprehended in May 2023 while promoting her children’s book “Are You with Me?” which explores a boy’s journey through his father’s death.

Witnesses at the trial remembered Eric Richins as a dedicated outdoorsman, industrious entrepreneur, and loving father to his three sons, aged five, seven, and nine at the time of his death. Testimonies presented text messages between Richins and her lover discussing fantasies of leaving her husband to secure a substantial divorce settlement. Additionally, digital evidence showcased Richins’ searches on fentanyl dosages, upscale prisons, and the documentation of poisoning on death certificates.

Further accounts detailed Richins’ initial attempt to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day with a fentanyl-laced sandwich, causing adverse reactions. Richins had purchased fentanyl pills from a local diner and subsequently sought stronger doses from a housekeeper.

During the trial, friends of Eric Richins recounted conversations where he suspected his wife of poisoning him. Despite Richins choosing not to testify and her legal team declining to call witnesses, a jury unanimously convicted her on all charges after deliberating for less than three hours.

Family members expressed relief at the verdict, with Eric Richins’ sister acknowledging the closure brought by the trial. In a public statement during her sentencing, Richins professed her innocence to her sons, emphasizing that she had not abandoned them, despite losing custody.

Prosecutors urged the court to impose a life sentence without parole, highlighting the trauma inflicted on the Richins’ sons. The eldest son, now 13, expressed fear of his mother’s potential release, citing concerns for his safety and that of his siblings and family.
