Chris Packham Urges Supermarkets to End Male Chick Culling

Date:

Renowned wildlife advocate Chris Packham has issued a passionate call for supermarkets to put an end to the inhumane culling of male chicks in the egg industry, questioning the delay in taking action.

The 65-year-old host of Springwatch expressed his frustration as he joined forces with celebrities like Dame Joanna Lumley and Brian Cox in urging major retailers to address the issue. Every year in the UK, around 45 million newly hatched male chicks are euthanized due to their inability to lay eggs or be used for meat, a practice that persists despite growing public awareness.

Describing the culling as both wasteful and cruel, Packham emphasized the need for the UK to abandon this outdated method. He pointed out that while other countries have already adopted alternative approaches, the UK is lagging behind. Packham called on the egg industry and retailers to heed public sentiment and take immediate steps to eliminate the culling of male chicks once and for all.

Support for this cause, spearheaded by the Vegetarian Society, has also come from figures such as actress Sadie Frost, author Cathy Cassidy, and comedian Dave Spikey. The society’s Ban Hatch and Dispatch petition has garnered over 40,000 signatures, including endorsements from more than 100 politicians.

The RSPCA has advocated for alternatives to culling, highlighting methods such as in-ovo sexing, raising male chicks for meat, and utilizing dual-purpose breeds to prevent the mass slaughter of newborn males.

Jenny Canham, leading the Public Affairs efforts, emphasized the crucial role retailers play in putting an end to male chick culling in the UK. Despite strong public support for ending the practice, most eggs sold in the UK still originate from systems where culling is prevalent. Canham stressed the need for a coordinated effort involving industry and government to phase out male chick culling, as the UK risks falling behind other nations.

A letter signed by 11 prominent personalities has been dispatched to executives at major retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons, and Lidl. While some previously argued that male chick culling was necessary to feed captive reptiles, recent research has identified viable alternatives.
