A call has been made for thousands of households to claim a £100 cash benefit provided through the Household Support Fund to assist with the increasing cost of living. The fund, allocated by local councils to low-income households, aims to help cover expenses such as food, energy, and water bills.
Various councils offer support in the form of vouchers or direct cash payments, with the type of aid determined by each council. In York, over 2,000 eligible residents have yet to claim their £100 payment from the Household Support Fund this winter.
The payment is non-repayable and is transferred directly to the recipient’s bank account. Eligibility criteria include currently receiving council tax assistance.
Nearly 5,000 residents in York qualify for this support, with the council having sent out letters containing application details. Applicants are required to submit a recent bank statement displaying personal information by November 23, 2025.
Cllr Katie Lomas of the City of York Council has encouraged recipients of the notification letter to claim their share of the Household Support Fund before the deadline, emphasizing the importance of accessing financial aid during the current cost of living crisis.
Individuals residing outside York are advised to inquire with their local councils regarding the support available through the Household Support Fund. Portsmouth City Council, for instance, is offering £150 to single-person households and £200 to couples or families meeting specific income thresholds.
