Coastguards’ Pay Cut Plans Sparks Outrage

Date:

Coastguards involved in life-saving operations are seeing a glimmer of hope regarding the proposed pay cuts as plans to eliminate their emergency call-out payments might be abandoned. Those who volunteer their time to carry out crucial missions are currently compensated at a rate of £11 per hour for emergencies. However, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is expected to discontinue these payments in September following a court ruling that classified such activities as “work.”

Meetings scheduled by the MCA to inform coastguards that they would no longer receive compensation were abruptly canceled after facing backlash and protests over the intended changes last week. The GMB union urged the MCA to reconsider its stance, emphasizing the unfair treatment of dedicated volunteers and calling for a policy reversal.

Nicola Savage, GMB’s National Officer, expressed concern over the potential removal of payment for the valuable services provided by coastguards, highlighting the need for fair treatment and respect for their efforts. The Mirror initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign, advocating for enhanced water safety measures following tragic incidents like the drowning of Sam Haycock in 2021.

In response to the mounting pressure, the MCA decided to pause the scheduled meetings to allow for further consultation and consideration of feedback from coastguard teams. The agency acknowledged the crucial role played by Coastguard Rescue Officers and emphasized the importance of their service along the coastlines.

The MCA recognized the PCS as the trade union representative for coastguards but is currently engaged in discussions with the GMB to find a mutually agreeable solution that aligns with existing recognition agreements. Recent legal judgments have influenced the decision to transition the Coastguard Rescue Service to a revised volunteer model with paid expenses, following a reclassification of the employment status of Coastguard Rescue Officers.

Coastguards recently converged in Westminster to demand the reinstatement of emergency call-out payments and expressed concerns about the declining morale within their ranks.
