“Coimbra: Europe’s Hidden Gem for British Travelers”

Date:

Portugal has always been a popular destination for British travelers looking for city breaks. While many opt for Porto or Lisbon for their vibrant streets and cultural experiences, Coimbra often goes unnoticed.

Once the capital of Portugal for over a century, Coimbra boasts a rich history with ancient monasteries, grand cathedrals, and a renowned university that continues to operate today. It transitioned into a hub of Renaissance art after the capital moved to Lisbon, attracting intellectuals drawn to its serene riverfront setting influenced by French and Italian styles.

Recently recognized by Which? as one of Europe’s hidden gems, Coimbra offers a mix of history, culture, and academia. The city features a UNESCO-listed university with a stunning baroque library open for public tours, as well as a charming old town free from the tourist crowds found in Lisbon and Porto.

Despite its proximity to Lisbon and Porto, train journeys to Coimbra take just 90 minutes and an hour respectively. While not as popular among British tourists, it makes for an ideal day trip from the coast, although staying longer to savor the authentic ambiance is recommended.

Visitors can explore the ancient ruins of Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, a Gothic monastery turned archaeological site dating back to the 1300s. The Santa Cruz Church is another highlight, featuring mesmerizing blue-tiled murals and a peaceful mausoleum housing the remains of Portugal’s first monarch.

The National Museum Machado de Castro showcases artworks and sculptures from renowned Renaissance artists who once resided in Coimbra, all within the serene confines of an 11th-century cloister built atop Roman tunnels.

Just a short drive from the city lie the picturesque Schist Villages, traditional mountain settlements being restored to preserve Portugal’s heritage. Guided tours from Coimbra lead through the Lousã Mountain to villages like Cerdeira and Talasnal, offering rustic charm and scenic mountain views. Arouce Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking a river beach, provides a perfect spot for swimming and enjoying the unspoiled natural beauty of the region.
