Tributes are flowing in for a dedicated nun who tragically passed away following a car accident as she was crossing the street.

Sister Genevieve, aged 87, was swiftly taken to a hospital after the collision but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and later died. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy in Newport expressed their profound sorrow upon learning about St. Genevieve’s demise.

Formerly the headteacher of St. Winifred’s School in Lee, south London, the nun lost her life after being hit on Stow Park Avenue in Newport around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24.

Gwent Police is currently investigating the incident and has not made any arrests yet, as reported by Wales Online. The authorities have issued an appeal for witnesses or individuals with pertinent information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward.

In an emotional tribute by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy, Sister Genevieve was lauded for her immense kindness towards everyone she encountered. They expressed their deep sadness over the sudden passing of Sr. Genevieve of the English Province at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

“Sr. Genevieve dedicated 67 years as a sister of St. Joseph of Annecy. While she taught in various schools across the province, she spent a considerable time as the head of St. Winifred’s School in Lee, south London. After retirement, Genevieve returned to her hometown of Chatham in Kent and later relocated to Devizes, Wiltshire.

“She relished participating in numerous parish activities, forming lasting friendships. In recent times, she resided in Newport, actively engaging with local groups.

“The sudden demise of Sr. Genevieve has left the sisters and all who knew her in shock. She will be remembered for her remarkable compassion, genuine interest in others, love for life, and unwavering faith.

“We extend our gratitude to the public, Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Police, University Hospital of Wales A&E, and Fr. Peter Davies (hospital chaplain) for the exceptional care provided to Sr. Genevieve. May she rest in peace.”

Archbishop Mark O’Toole expressed his shock at the tragic circumstances surrounding Sr. Genevieve’s death and offered prayers for her soul and comfort to the Sisters of St. Joseph and all mourning her loss.
