The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School marked a significant and emotional moment for Chris Norbury, a longtime resident deeply affected by February’s tragic mass shooting at the school. Norbury, whose wife was present during the shooting, joined many community members in witnessing the start of the demolition process on Monday.
Reflecting on the event, Norbury emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs and emotions of those directly impacted by the tragedy. He expressed hope that the demolition signifies a new beginning for Tumbler Ridge and its student community.
The school, built in the 1980s during the town’s establishment for coal mining, holds decades of memories for generations of students. However, following the tragic incident, students and teachers expressed a collective desire not to return to the building, signaling a need for closure and renewal in the community’s healing process.
As plans for a new school progress, students are transitioning to a temporary campus equipped with essential facilities for their education. The School District 59 board chair, Chad Anderson, highlighted the focus on providing a safe and conducive learning environment for students and staff, offering distance learning options for those still coping with the aftermath of the shooting.
