A woman in fear resorted to wielding a knife and escaping when her controlling boyfriend tried to invade her privacy by going through her phone. Liam Labourne, residing in Bransholme, Hull, engaged in physical and emotional abuse towards his girlfriend, including hitting and intimidating her when he discovered messages and images he disapproved of on her phone.
Labourne admitted to coercive and controlling behavior during the period from January 1 to August 4, 2024, in Scunthorpe. This confession came on the day of his scheduled trial at Hull Crown Court, leading to the dropping of other charges. The prosecution revealed that Labourne’s relationship with the woman began in August 2023 but turned abusive in early 2024, prompting the woman’s sister to alert the authorities.
Subsequently, Labourne subjected his girlfriend to verbal abuse, restricted her movements, and constantly monitored her through calls and texts. He resorted to physical violence, culminating in an incident on July 29, 2024, where he assaulted her severely after discovering a birthday message from another man on her phone. The woman, feeling threatened, fled with a knife for protection, hiding until Labourne left.
Labourne’s abusive behavior continued, leading to an altercation in August 2024 when he forced himself into the woman’s car wielding a baseball bat, instilling fear in her as he verbally and physically assaulted her. The situation escalated further when the woman’s ex-boyfriend intervened, resulting in police intervention.
The victim, left traumatized by the ordeal, suffered from trust issues and emotional distress. Labourne had a history of previous convictions for assault and criminal damage, displaying a pattern of violent behavior towards intimate partners in the past. Despite pleading guilty and expressing remorse, Labourne was sentenced to three years in prison, accompanied by a seven-year restraining order and a victims’ surcharge.
