In a shocking incident, a convicted child rapist attempted to smother his cellmate using a pillow due to his constant disruptive behavior, including loud snoring and other noises. Christopher Sweeney, aged 45, launched the attack on his 72-year-old cellmate, Martin Whittle, at HMP Nottingham.
Sweeney confessed to forcefully pressing the pillow over Whittle’s face for a minute with the intention of killing him. Additionally, Sweeney admitted to several unprosecuted crimes dating back to 2016, including attempted robberies and a burglary.
Following the violent act, Judge Nirmal Shant KC sentenced Sweeney to 18 years in prison, noting his lack of remorse and explicit desire to harm his cellmate. The prosecutor, Katrina Wilson, detailed the assault, highlighting Sweeney’s aggressive behavior and subsequent admission of guilt.
Sweeney’s criminal record revealed a history of 71 offenses, with previous convictions for serious crimes such as wounding, arson, and robbery. Notably, he had previously served time for raping a minor and repeatedly violated sex offender registry terms.
Despite the severity of the case, Sweeney’s defense attorney, Steve Cobley, emphasized his client’s admission of past crimes, which provided closure to the victims. The sentence imposed included 13 years of custody and a five-year extended license due to the perceived danger he posed.
