An investigation was launched on a large cruise ship after nearly 80 passengers and crew members fell ill with symptoms of norovirus, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. The Holland America’s Westerdam ship, carrying around 2,800 passengers, implemented additional safety measures following the suspected norovirus outbreak.
Health officials boarded the vessel during its voyage from Japan to Hong Kong after reports of illnesses in March. Tests conducted onboard revealed that seven individuals tested positive for norovirus. Holland America responded by enhancing sanitation procedures and conducting thorough cleaning upon the ship’s arrival in Hong Kong.
The cruise ship had made stops in Japan, South Korea, and China before the outbreak occurred. Authorities in Hong Kong confirmed that two passengers who initially fell ill boarded the ship in Japan, with symptoms appearing on the same day, leading to more cases among other travelers.
Following inspections, health advice was provided to affected individuals and crew members onboard, emphasizing the importance of infection control measures and hygiene practices. Passengers and crew members free of illness were permitted to disembark after the ship underwent thorough cleaning and disinfection.
Dr. Edwin Tsui, from the Centre for Health Protection, urged vigilance in maintaining personal, food, and environmental hygiene to prevent further spread of norovirus. The cruise ship continued its journey to the Philippines after departing from Hong Kong.
This incident follows a recent outbreak on Fred Olsen’s The Balmoral cruise, where numerous passengers fell ill with gastroenteritis symptoms earlier this year. The cruise line promptly implemented measures to contain the illness and provide medical support to affected guests.
