Danish MEP Tells Trump to “Leave” Over Greenland Annexation

Date:

A European Parliament member expressed strong opposition to Donald Trump’s proposal to annex Greenland by telling him to “leave” in a forceful speech. Danish MEP Anders Vistisen delivered a direct message to the President, stating, “Let me make this clear to you: Mr. President…depart.” The chair promptly interrupted Vistisen, pointing out that his language was inappropriate for the parliamentary setting and violated the rules. This is not the first instance of Vistisen using such language towards Donald Trump; he previously used it a year ago when Trump first mentioned the idea of the US acquiring Greenland.

The criticism followed a statement by a key Trump supporter who informed UK MPs that he was in London to ease tensions in the dispute. However, during a parliamentary address, Republican Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of a strong America for the global community. Ursula Von Der Leyen, a prominent EU official, criticized Trump’s threats of imposing new tariffs on Greenland, labeling them as “misguided, particularly among long-standing allies.”

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Von der Leyen questioned Trump’s credibility after he had previously agreed not to introduce further tariffs on EU nations. She emphasized the significance of honoring agreements in both politics and business, reiterating that a handshake between friends must hold meaning. Von der Leyen pledged that the EU’s response would be resolute, unified, and proportionate.

Trump has insisted on the US taking control of Greenland to deter potential threats from China and Russia. Ahead of his scheduled speech in Davos, he indicated via social media his agreement to participate in a meeting involving various parties. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that America’s relationship with Europe was at a peak, urging trade partners to approach the situation calmly. However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioned that challenges may lie ahead, emphasizing Denmark’s preference for cooperation over conflict.
