David Beckham Doubles Wealth, Reaches Billionaire Status

Date:

Superstar David Beckham has achieved billionaire status in Britain as his wealth has doubled over the past year. Alongside his wife Victoria, the couple’s fortune now stands at nearly £1.2 billion, according to the most recent Sunday Times Rich List.

Their wealth has skyrocketed from £500 million a year ago, surpassing even King Charles III, whose personal wealth increased to £680 million in the past year due to investment gains. While Beckham is renowned for his sponsorship deals, the primary driver of his increasing wealth is attributed to his investments in property and ownership stake in Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

Having turned 51 earlier this month, Beckham reportedly invested £16 million in Inter Miami, which officially joined the MLS as its 25th club in early 2018. His stake in the club is now estimated at £300 million, in addition to his ownership of property surrounding Inter Miami’s new 25,000-seater stadium, named Freedom Park, with a projected value of £400 million.

Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, humorously remarked, “I wouldn’t want to play David Beckham at Monopoly.” The Beckhams have climbed from joint 273rd to 141st on this year’s Rich List, boasting assets that include a £50 million London residence and a £20 million estate in the Cotswolds.

The latest Sunday Times Rich List covers a spectrum of wealthy individuals from various sectors including business, sports, and entertainment. The total wealth of the UK’s richest 350 individuals and families has risen by 1.4% to £784 billion this year, exceeding the annual GDP of Belgium, Sweden, and Israel combined. The list now features 157 UK billionaires, with the minimum wealth threshold set at £340 million.

Familiar names on the list include music icons such as Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis, whose combined wealth of £375 million placed them at 325th. The success of their reunion tour significantly contributed to their financial growth. Notably, Glastonbury’s Emily Eavis made her debut on the list at 314th place due to the festival’s substantial value, estimated to be at least £400 million.

The research also highlights younger individuals like heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, with a fortune of £162 million, surpassing singer Dua Lipa’s £150 million but trailing behind former One Direction member Harry Styles, estimated at £235 million. Other prominent figures on the list include Sir Elton John, Lord Lloyd-Webber, JK Rowling, and Rolling Stones legends Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Moreover, a separate study by the TUC revealed a significant increase in the number of billionaires since 2010, while real wages for ordinary workers have stagnated. The disparity in wealth distribution is evident as the average wealth of a Sunday Times Rich List member is over 7,600 times higher than that of an average UK household. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak emphasized the need for a fairer economic system that values work over excessive wealth accumulation.
