“Deadly Bus-Tanker Collision Claims 16 Lives in Indonesia”

Date:

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, May 6, when a passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker truck on Sumatra island in Indonesia, resulting in the death of at least 16 individuals and injuring four others, according to officials.

The crash took place around midday on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in the North Musi Rawas regency of South Sumatra province. The intercity bus, carrying approximately 20 passengers, was en route from Lubuklinggau city to Jambi city when it collided with the tanker truck traveling in the opposite direction. Initial investigations suggest that the bus may have emitted sparks before the collision, leading the driver to veer to the right side of the road in an attempt to avoid a more severe accident. However, the high-speed approach of the oil tanker truck left little time to prevent a direct impact.

The collision resulted in a fiery blaze engulfing both vehicles, trapping numerous victims inside. Among the casualties were the bus driver, 13 passengers, the tanker’s driver, and assistant, all of whom succumbed to burns inside the vehicles. Four bus passengers survived the crash, with three sustaining severe burn injuries and one experiencing minor injuries.

Authorities are still in the process of identifying the total number of fatalities as they track the passenger manifest. Rescuers, including disaster response teams and traffic police, worked to evacuate victims and clear the wreckage, with several individuals trapped inside the vehicles, complicating the rescue operations and disrupting traffic on the highway.

Photos and videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency depicted firefighters battling the flames as black smoke and orange flames billowed into the sky. The scene on the ground revealed the charred remnants of the bus and tanker truck, with twisted metal strewn across the highway.

Sixteen body bags containing victims’ remains were delivered to Siti Aisyah Hospital in Lubuk Linggau for identification purposes. Police have confirmed the identities of five victims, including the bus driver, two bus crew members, the tanker driver, and one passenger, while the remaining 11 victims are yet to be identified as forensic teams continue their assessments.

The investigation has revealed that the bus may have crossed into the opposite lane while trying to avoid a pothole, leading to the head-on collision and subsequent fire.
