Rescuers are facing a challenging task in Indonesia as they navigate through masses of dense mud and debris in a frantic effort to locate numerous individuals feared trapped beneath the rubble following a destructive landslide that struck a village on Java Island.
The catastrophic incident, which occurred early on Saturday on the slopes of Mount Burangrang in West Java, has resulted in 11 confirmed fatalities with 79 individuals still unaccounted for. Pasir Langu village bore the brunt of the disaster, with 34 homes flattened by torrents of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees cascading downhill after days of relentless heavy rain.
Over 230 residents residing near the disaster site have been evacuated to temporary government shelters amidst concerns of a potential surge in the death toll. The number of victims rose to 11 after the recovery of two additional bodies on Sunday morning, as reported by Ade Dian Permana from the local search and rescue office.
Footage released by Indonesia’s rescue agency Basarnas depicts emergency workers diligently digging through sludge using farm tools and manual labor to retrieve mud-covered bodies, due to the challenging soft and unstable ground impeding the use of heavy machinery.
In light of the ongoing challenges, Indonesia’s vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, visited the afflicted village to pledge preventive measures against future calamities. He emphasized the need for local authorities to address land conversion issues in disaster-prone areas and implement stricter safety protocols.
Mohammad Syafii, the chief of Basarnas, highlighted the intensified complexities of the search operation due to adverse weather conditions and hazardous terrain. Despite the obstacles, he affirmed the utilization of all available resources, including drones, K-9 teams, and ground units, prioritizing safety above all else.
Indonesia frequently grapples with floods and landslides during the rainy season, spanning from October to April, given its geographical composition of over 17,000 islands hosting millions of inhabitants in mountainous regions and flood-prone plains.
