“Deadly Roadside Bombing Rocks Colombian Highway”

Date:

An explosion from a roadside bomb near a busy Colombian highway has resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 20 others. The tragic incident occurred on the Pan-American highway in the southwestern region of Colombia, and images depicting the aftermath of the attack were widely shared on social media platforms.

Governor Octavio Guzmán of the state of Cauca, where the attack occurred, condemned the violence as an indiscriminate assault on civilians. He stated that the explosive device was detonated in the El Túnel area of Cajibío, leading to the death of seven civilians and causing severe injuries to over 17 individuals, with the total number of injured later confirmed to be 20. Guzmán described the attack as a heartbreaking event that deeply affects the community and families.

This incident is part of a series of violent events in the region, which authorities attribute to dissident members of the now-disbanded guerrilla group FARC. These individuals, who opposed a 2016 peace agreement with the government, are reportedly attempting to disrupt ongoing peace negotiations with Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

Security concerns have become a significant topic in the lead-up to the upcoming presidential election on May 31. A recent bombing targeting a military base in Cali resulted in injuries to two individuals.

Governor Guzmán called for immediate action from the government to address the escalating public security crisis in the region. He emphasized the strain on the local healthcare system, the uncertainty surrounding the Pan-American Highway, and the efforts of the authorities to combat criminal activities in various areas.

In his plea for intervention, Guzmán highlighted the need to stand against violence and protect the vulnerable population. He underscored the community’s resolve not to allow fear to prevail and called for a united response to confront the challenges posed by criminal elements.
