After a decade-long pledge to grow his beard until Arsenal won the league, a devoted fan finally shaved off his 57cm facial hair. Rafal Goral, a 45-year-old refinery worker, felt a sense of loss as he bid farewell to the beard he had been cultivating since 2016.
The commitment was made in March of that year during Arsène Wenger’s tenure as Arsenal’s manager when the team had endured a 12-year title drought in the Premier League. Despite witnessing other teams, including Leicester City, clinch the championship during this period, Rafal held true to his promise.
The moment of triumph came for Rafal when Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal secured the league title last month. To mark the occasion, he dyed his beard red and shaved it off at Arsenal’s Premier League Title parade.
Reflecting on the change, Rafal from Chelmsford, Essex, expressed mixed emotions, stating, “I feel like I’ve lost a part of my identity. It was a tough decision, but I kept my word. Go Gunners!”
While colleagues, especially Spurs fans, doubted his commitment over the years, Rafal remained steadfast in his pledge. Despite the initial challenges and skepticism, he stayed true to his vow, impressing his peers with his dedication.
Having supported Arsenal for almost two decades, Rafal shared, “I made this promise to stop shaving until we won the league, and I stuck to it.” Despite the teasing comparisons to Gandalf and the prolonged waiting period, Rafal’s perseverance paid off as he finally bid farewell to his beard.
