“Decades-Old Cold Case Solved: Conviction in Sarah Geer Murder”

Date:

After more than 40 years, the perpetrator responsible for the rape and murder of 13-year-old Sarah Geer has been convicted, thanks to DNA evidence found on a discarded cigarette. Sarah was attacked in Cloverdale, California, in 1982 while walking home from a friend’s house. Her body was discovered the next day, but the case went unsolved due to limited forensic technology at the time.

Recent advancements in DNA analysis led to a breakthrough in the case nearly 44 years later, resulting in the conviction of James Unick for Sarah’s murder on what would have been her 57th birthday. The investigation was reignited in 2021 after a DNA profile was matched to Unick through familial genealogical databases.

Unick was arrested in 2024 after DNA evidence collected from a cigarette butt linked him to the crime scene. He was found guilty and sentenced to life without parole. Despite Unick’s claims of consensual sex with Sarah, the jury rejected his defense, bringing closure to a decades-old case. District Attorney Carla Rodriguez hailed the verdict as a long-awaited step towards justice, while Cloverdale Chief of Police Chris Parker expressed relief that the perpetrator was finally held accountable. Unick’s sentencing is scheduled for April 23.
