A shocking video captured the distressing moment when two defenseless dogs were pulled behind a vehicle while concerned bystanders contacted the authorities.
The dogs, a German Shepherd named Marzipan and a pit bull named Nougat, were tethered to the rear of a red Volkswagen Passat and appeared to struggle to keep pace as the car moved along the street. A witness, taken aback by the scene, shouted in disbelief about the mistreatment of the dogs.
Nougat managed to free itself, prompting the driver to collect both dogs and place them inside the car before allegedly fleeing the scene. Witnesses promptly notified the New York Police Department (NYPD) after identifying the driver as Dan Bujor, aged 68, who was reportedly driving through Long Island.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Bujor faced charges of animal cruelty for tying the dogs to the car and dragging them along a Long Island City street. She commended the individuals who reported the incident and the NYPD for swiftly apprehending the suspect and transferring the dogs to the care of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
Both dogs, Marzipan and Nougat, were examined by the ASPCA in Manhattan. Marzipan, aged 2, was found with a ruptured eardrum, while Nougat, estimated to be between 2 and 4 years old, had injuries to its paw pads and skin inflammation.
Howard Lawrence, ASPCA Vice President of Humane Law Enforcement, expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the ongoing issue of animal abuse in New York City. The ASPCA, in collaboration with other entities, is providing care for the dogs and other animals affected by cruelty cases.
Dan Bujor of Long Island City faced charges including overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals, failure to provide sustenance, and driving without a license. If convicted, he could serve up to one year in jail. The case is scheduled to proceed at Queens Criminal Court on March 5.
