A driver who was previously banned was found driving again and made a joke about having accumulated 59 penalty points when police stopped him. Video footage from the police bodycam revealed that Iain Ashmore, 45, was stopped while driving a white Ford Transit Connect on July 23, despite being prohibited from driving.
Ashmore initially complained about being frequently pulled over and accused the police of targeting him unfairly, stating that he had been stopped three times in one month. He even threatened to file a formal complaint.
Upon checking his driving record, PC Mark Solder informed Ashmore that he had amassed 59 penalty points. In response, Ashmore humorously asked if his points had decreased, then corrected himself by saying it was actually 61.
In the UK, drivers who accumulate 12 points within three years usually face a minimum six-month driving ban under the ‘totting up’ system. When questioned about how he managed to retain his license with 61 points, Ashmore jokingly replied, “Because I’m a very good person.”
Ashmore admitted that his insurance costs were extremely high but dismissed them as just a significant expense, noting that they were still lower than insurance for truck drivers.
In court, it was revealed that Ashmore drove the white Ford Transit Connect on three separate occasions while disqualified and committed various driving offenses. He received an eight-week suspended prison sentence, a driving ban until July 2027, and was ordered to pay court fees and a surcharge.
PC Solder from Lincolnshire Police stated, “This individual continued to drive despite being banned until 2027, with 59 points on his license. Driving is a privilege that comes with responsibilities, which this individual failed to uphold, posing a risk to other law-abiding drivers.”
