A village neighboring a British RAF base in Cyprus was left almost empty following drone attacks on the military installation. The village of Akrotiri experienced the commotion of blaring sirens and a convoy of emergency vehicles hurrying towards the RAF base bearing the same name. The drones targeted the strategically important RAF base amid the ongoing US-Israeli-led conflict with Iran.
Initially attributed to Iran, the drones were later revealed to have been dispatched by pro-Iranian militias from either Lebanon or Iraq. This unsettling revelation prompted many villagers to depart amidst the aftermath, with uncertainty looming over the situation.
The RAF base accommodates around 4,000 UK armed service members along with approximately 7,000 civilians and their families. A 25-year-old mother of three, Christina S, recounted being startled from sleep by the drone noise in the dead of night. Assuming it was a routine drill, she swiftly evacuated her family upon hearing the sirens, prioritizing the safety of her children.
Christina described the unprecedented nature of the incident, highlighting the lack of official information which led to a flurry of calls among residents to ascertain the next course of action. Fortunately, radar detected another missile approaching the base, but a jet successfully intercepted and neutralized the threat.
Deputy mayor of Akrotiri, George Konstantinou, disclosed that only a handful of the village’s residents had returned following the government’s evacuation directive. Despite a gradual return of villagers, the local schools remained closed awaiting government decisions.
The drone strike marked a first-time security breach at the base, leaving the community in shock. Residents like Christina’s sister, Mariana, sought refuge in nearby areas due to safety concerns triggered by the unsettling event.
Akrotiri, known for its historical artifacts and mixed population, stands as a residential hub near the military facility. UK defense secretary John Healey visited Cyprus to meet with local authorities after the drone incursion managed to bypass defenses and inflict damage on the base.
