“Drone Incident Closes Runway at Amsterdam Airport”

Date:

A major European airport had to temporarily close one of its runways due to an unusual incident, as reported by the police. The Polderbaan runway at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam was shut down for 45 minutes around midday because of a drone flying at an altitude of approximately 150 meters. An online live stream by aviation enthusiasts captured a Transavia pilot mentioning that the drone came within about 50 meters of their aircraft.

Despite a police operation involving a helicopter, neither the drone nor its operator could be located. The Royal Marechaussee, the military police spokesperson, described the situation as “quite unique,” suggesting that the drone was likely being operated as a hobby.

Authorities indicated that the drone was relatively small and that the drone activity did not pose a threat to air traffic. However, as a precaution, incoming flights were redirected to another runway during the closure of the Polderbaan.

Meanwhile, recent incidents in other European countries have raised concerns over drone activities. The Danish Defence Ministry reported multiple sightings of drones near its defense facilities, leading to temporary closures of Danish airports. Despite public worries and unconfirmed reports of numerous drone sightings, citizens are urged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The repeated drone incidents, including recent occurrences at Danish airports, have sparked security concerns in northern Europe amidst heightened tensions due to increasing Russian aggression.
