A group of criminals involved in drug trafficking and discussing the exchange of high-powered weapons have been sentenced to a combined total of 75 years in prison following the successful decryption of their encrypted messages by law enforcement.
The main orchestrator, Carl Ian Jones from Hale, Greater Manchester, was apprehended for attempting to trade an assault rifle and for concealing firearms at his holiday residence in Mallorca. Alongside him, two other individuals, Harly Wise and Naginder Gill, were deemed “extremely dangerous” and were also convicted at Bolton Crown Court after a thorough investigation conducted by the National Crime Agency.
Using the secure messaging platform EncroChat, Jones, Wise, and Gill orchestrated various illegal activities involving firearms and narcotics. Jones, known as ‘stalehead’ on EncroChat, was caught trying to negotiate the sale of an AR15 assault rifle with ammunition and sought storage for firearms hidden at his Mallorca property. Wise, using aliases ‘bluffcheatah’ and ‘hungrykiller’, engaged in discussions with Jones about trading weapons like AK47s and an Uzi submachine gun.
In another alarming revelation, Wise discussed kidnapping a rival drug dealer over a significant debt, hinting at assistance from certain individuals. Wise even attended a meeting in London’s Greenwich Park to further plan the abduction. Additionally, Wise facilitated the sale of handguns and ammunition to an EncroChat contact in a transaction that resulted in the imprisonment of two individuals.
Following a meticulous analysis of extensive EncroChat data related to drug trafficking by both Jones and Wise, the NCA determined that the duo acted as middlemen in the drug trade, selling substances at marked-up prices. Gill, operating under the handle ‘indianocean’, also played a role in the criminal activities.
Jones received a 30-year sentence for various drug and weapon-related conspiracies, while Wise was sentenced to 25 years for similar offenses. Gill, on the other hand, was handed a 20-year prison term for his involvement in drug trafficking schemes.
Expressing relief at the arrest and conviction of these dangerous individuals, NCA branch commander Jon Hughes emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to combat drug and weapon-related crimes, ensuring the safety of the public from such threats.
