“Dutch Transgender Darts Player Defies Critics”

Date:

Noa-Lynn van Leuven responds to backlash over her participation in women’s darts competitions. The 29-year-old transgender player, originally from the Netherlands, made history as the first Dutch woman to qualify for the World Darts Championship. Despite a strong start in her match against Kevin Doets, she ultimately lost 3-1 in the first round.

The World Darts Federation recently banned transgender players from their events, but the Professional Darts Corporation still allows their participation. Van Leuven, in an interview with Nu.nl, defended her eligibility and stated she won’t engage in constant debates about her identity while gearing up for the upcoming World Championship.

Regarding the Netherlands Olympic committee’s draft guidance on transgender participation potentially affecting fair competition due to physical differences, Van Leuven clarified that darts relies on skill rather than physical strength. She emphasized that the guideline pertains more to grassroots sports than elite competition.

Although the PDC has not announced any changes to its eligibility rules, Van Leuven acknowledged the possibility of future adjustments that could impact her career and the broader transgender community. Overcoming online abuse and mental health challenges, she secured her place in the World Championship, showcasing a remarkable comeback from a dark period of uncertainty and depression.

Van Leuven reflected on her journey, expressing gratitude for rediscovering her passion for darts and the opportunity to compete once more. Despite facing significant mental health struggles and contemplating her future, she has found renewed determination and joy in returning to the sport at a competitive level.
