“E-bike Fire Tragedy Claims Mother and Two Children”

Date:

A tragic incident occurred at a family home in Cambridge when a modified e-bike caused a devastating fire that claimed the lives of a mother and her two young children, aged four and eight. The victims were identified as Gemma Germeney, 31, Lilly Peden, and Oliver Peden. The family’s two dogs also perished in the blaze, while the children’s father, Scott Peden, was left in a coma for a month.

The fire service investigation revealed that the probable cause of the fire was the e-bike, which was being charged at the time of the incident. During a pre-inquest review hearing, Cambridgeshire area coroner Elizabeth Gray stated that the fire was caused by a modified e-bike, leading to the tragic outcome.

Scott Peden’s counsel, Miles Bennett, requested that a person known as Mr. Severinov be considered a witness in the proceedings due to his involvement in modifying the lithium battery of the e-bike. Bennett emphasized the importance of including key individuals in the investigation process to understand the circumstances leading to the fire.

The full inquest is expected to delve into details such as the purchase of the bike, the battery’s origin, and the modifications made, shedding light on the background of the case. Alexandra Tampakopoulos, representing the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), highlighted the need for testimonies from involved parties to provide a comprehensive understanding of the incident.

Following the tragedy, Mr. Peden, who lost his family in the fire, has advocated for enhanced e-bike safety regulations. Expressing his lack of awareness regarding the dangers of lithium-ion batteries prior to the incident, he stressed the urgent need for regulatory changes in the industry to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The proceedings have been adjourned, with a two-day full inquest hearing scheduled for a later date, likely in August or beyond. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the casualties at the scene and the subsequent hospitalization of the children, who unfortunately did not survive.
