“Education Minister Slams Reform UK for Blaming Parents”

Date:

The education minister spearheading the revamp of the special education needs and disabilities system has condemned Reform UK for pointing fingers at parents. Schools standards minister Georgia Gould dismissed remarks from party members, which have included suggestions of children being labeled as “naughty,” criticism of parenting, and claims of an excessive diagnosis of SEND issues. She strongly refuted the notion of parents being at fault and cautioned that such statements could affect children’s self-perception and sense of belonging in school.

In response to Reform, Ms. Gould stated, “I’ve come across comments about overdiagnosis, blaming parents, and categorizing children as merely mischievous.” She emphasized the real-world impact of such statements on individuals’ self-esteem, community relationships, and children’s school experience. She firmly denied the notion that parents were responsible for any wrongdoing.

Recently, Reform’s deputy leader Richard Tice has been vocal about the SEND system, alleging an overdiagnosis of children with SEND and criticizing the sight of children wearing ear defenders in classrooms as “insane.” Additionally, he suggested that some parents were exploiting the SEND system for financial gain. Nigel Farage also echoed concerns about overdiagnosis of mental health and behavioral issues in children, warning of a victimized class.

Dr. David Bull, Reform’s chairman, faced criticism from Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson for his remarks implying that many children with SEND were simply misbehaving due to bad parenting. Ms. Gould has been on a nationwide tour following Labour’s inheritance of a struggling SEND system. She has engaged with experts, parents, and children in preparation for the Government’s forthcoming SEND White Paper. Parents eagerly await the announced reforms, having lost trust in schools, councils, and the Government due to past disappointments.

Despite acknowledging the significant challenges ahead, Ms. Gould expressed optimism, stating, “People across society are committed to this cause. Teachers are dedicated to serving all children, and many children require specialized education outside mainstream classrooms.” She highlighted the enthusiasm and dedication present in the education sector to better support children with special educational needs.

The Government has pledged over £3 billion to establish numerous new specialist places, enhance teacher training, and appoint dedicated SEND leads in all Best Start Family Hubs nationwide. A spokesperson for Reform UK responded to Minister Gould’s remarks by highlighting concerns about the increasing prevalence of SEND diagnoses and the financial strain this places on schools and local authorities.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting previously acknowledged an “overdiagnosis” of mental health conditions but later admitted his comments were inadequate and pledged to rectify the system’s shortcomings in supporting those with mental health challenges.
