“Electoral Commission Clears Nigel Farage of Campaign Spending Probe”

Date:

The Electoral Commission has decided not to investigate Nigel Farage’s campaign spending in the general election. The Labour Party had raised concerns about possible overspending by the Reform UK leader in his constituency, suggesting it might have violated electoral laws.

Allegations were made that Mr. Farage’s campaign inaccurately reported expenses during his Clacton MP bid in the 2024 General Election. Despite facing criticism for reporting irregularities, Mr. Farage secured the seat after several unsuccessful attempts in the past.

Richard Everett, a former Reform councillor and member of Farage’s campaign team, claimed that the party failed to disclose spending on various items such as leaflets, banners, utility bills, and office refurbishments in Clacton, potentially exceeding the constituency’s spending limit.

However, the Electoral Commission declared that no undisclosed spending by Reform UK at the national level was found. Essex Police had initially considered investigating the reported expenditure discrepancies but later stated that they could not proceed due to a time limit constraint.

In a letter to Reform UK, the Electoral Commission stated that no credible evidence of electoral law breaches was discovered, concluding their inquiry without further action. Mr. Farage’s election agent in Clacton, Peter Harris, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and affirmed that the complaints were unfounded.

Reform UK had vehemently denied any wrongdoing regarding election spending and dismissed Mr. Everett’s accusations, labeling him a disgruntled former member expelled from the party months ago.
