England supporters made a pilgrimage to the hometown of Martin Luther King before the crucial World Cup semi-final, honoring the civil rights icon who was tragically assassinated in 1968. Hundreds of Three Lions fans visited King’s childhood residence in Atlanta, donning their England jerseys throughout the neighborhood where King once resided, including his birthplace, church, and museum.
Among the visitors was John Mills, a 64-year-old Mansfield Town fan from Biddulph, near Stoke-on-Trent, who works as a consultant and serves as the safeguarding manager for British Ice Skating. Accompanying him was his friend Brian Jackson, a 75-year-old retired project manager from Mansfield, Notts.
Reflecting on their trip, John expressed, “We attended all the group stage matches before returning to England due to budget constraints. Our tradition is to explore historical sites in cities hosting England games. Atlanta’s ties to Martin Luther King made it a captivating visit, witnessing his birthplace and church.”
Brian chimed in, saying, “While we are passionate about football and supporting England, we enjoy diversifying our experiences before matches. Following this game, we plan to travel to Memphis to visit Graceland, Elvis Presley’s former residence, then head to New York with hopes of witnessing the final match.”
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, John humorously added, “I appreciate my generous boss for allowing me to attend the World Cup. It has been an incredible experience.” Martin Luther King’s legacy lives on, with his impactful speeches advocating against racism and discrimination, notably his iconic “I have a dream” speech delivered in Washington in 1963.
