“England Fans Urged to Stay Hydrated in Heatwave”

Date:

Ambulance leaders are cautioning England supporters to stay hydrated during the current heatwave as they gear up for the World Cup showdown with Panama.

The head of the largest ambulance service in the UK has expressed concerns over the rising pressure on emergency services, emphasizing the importance of drinking water regularly, even if not feeling thirsty. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) chief urges fans to intersperse alcoholic beverages with water consumption before and during the Panama game on Saturday evening.

This advisory coincides with the Met Office’s announcement that Friday marked the third consecutive day of record-breaking June temperatures, with Wattisham, Suffolk, recording a provisional high of 36.9C, surpassing the previous high of 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset.

LAS has witnessed a surge in life-threatening emergencies, with several hospitals declaring critical incidents. Data reveals a 50% spike in 999 calls and an increase in alcohol-related incidents following the recent match against Ghana.

Craig Harman, LAS chief operating officer, anticipates a further increase in emergency calls in the coming days, stressing the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and refraining from outdoor exercise during peak heat periods.

The capital reported a 50% rise in life-threatening calls on Wednesday, with cardiac arrests up by 30%, mirroring potential trends nationwide.

The Met Office’s red warning remains in effect, with temperatures forecasted to remain above 30C in southern regions through Saturday.

Darren Farmer, LAS director of ambulance operations, urges responsible drinking and hydration during the upcoming game, highlighting the potential risks of alcohol consumption in combination with high excitement, tension, and warm weather.

Temperatures are expected to soar in London, Manchester, Belfast, and Cardiff, with previous records being broken across various regions.

The Met Office’s red alert continues for London and surrounding areas, extending until Friday evening due to the extreme heatwave conditions.

Hospitals, including those near the forthcoming Wimbledon tennis championships, are bracing for increased demand for emergency services amidst the prolonged heatwave.

Transport services have faced disruptions, prompting rail operators to discourage beach travel in light of the intense heat.

Several hospitals have declared critical incidents, leading to the cancellation of planned operations and outpatient appointments.

The prevailing heatwave, attributed to a stationary high-pressure “heat-dome” over western Europe, has brought unprecedented temperatures and challenges throughout the continent.
