“England Resident Doctors Prepare for Six-Day Strike”

Date:

Tens of thousands of resident doctors in England are preparing for a six-day strike next week following unsuccessful negotiations to avoid the walkout.

The government’s initial offer of 1,000 additional training positions, part of a deal on pay and employment terms, has been retracted by the Health Department, citing financial and operational constraints.

Despite being given a 48-hour ultimatum by the Prime Minister to reconsider the offer, which included extra NHS training roles, the British Medical Association’s resident doctors committee did not reach an agreement.

Dr. Jack Fletcher, chairman of the BMA resident doctors committee, expressed willingness to engage with the government to prevent the strike. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to enhance the offer.

Dr. Fletcher criticized the government for reducing training opportunities while patients continue to receive care in corridors outside of strike periods, attributing the issue to a shortage of training positions.

When questioned about not consulting members on the government’s proposal, Dr. Fletcher defended the decision, stating that it did not meet the required standard and was unlikely to be accepted by the committee.

In response to the impasse, a Department of Health spokesperson expressed disappointment over the upcoming strikes, highlighting the government’s efforts to improve resident doctors’ remuneration and working conditions.

The spokesperson noted that due to the lack of agreement to halt the strikes and present the offer to members, the planned additional training places cannot be implemented in April as initially planned.

The statement emphasized that despite the postponement of the training positions, the overall number of resident doctors will remain unaffected, ensuring continued patient care within the NHS.
