Local elections in numerous English councils scheduled for May have been delayed, according to Local Government Secretary Steve Reed. A total of 29 councils will now hold their elections in 2027 instead of on May 7. Concerns were raised by over 350 authorities regarding the potential disruption caused by a proposed reorganization of local government, aiming to transition from a two-tier system to single-tier “unitary” authorities.
Critics have accused the Government of disenfranchising voters by postponing elections, but Reed defended the decision, emphasizing that the restructuring would enhance the efficiency of local government services. Notable councils where elections won’t take place on May 7 include Lincoln, Exeter, Norwich, Peterborough, Preston, Cannock Chase, Harlow, Welwyn Hatfield, and West Lancashire.
Additionally, polling for county council voters in East Sussex, West Sussex, Norfolk, and Suffolk has been delayed, with councillors’ terms being extended. However, elections in some areas, such as Essex County Council, Hampshire County Council, and Isle of Wight Council, will proceed after a one-year delay.
Reed assured that most council elections across England would proceed as planned, except in the affected areas, where the reorganization process must be accommodated. Darren Hughes, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, emphasized the importance of elections in upholding representative democracy and expressed concerns that elections should not be undermined as bureaucratic inconveniences.
The Government’s decision to postpone elections has sparked debate, with Reed clarifying that not all elections have been canceled and highlighting the necessity of improving local government services for the benefit of the community.
