“Enigmatic Statue in Old Bern Baffles Onlookers”

Date:

In the heart of Old Bern, Switzerland, stands a striking yet unsettling statue that has puzzled onlookers for nearly five centuries. Known as the Kindlifresserbrunnen, or the Fountain of the Eater of Little Children, this sculpture features an ogre-like figure adorned in red, green, and yellow, devouring a baby’s head while other children appear in distress nearby.

Crafted by Hans Gieng in 1546 to replace a wooden sculpture, the Kindlifresserbrunnen is part of Bern’s historic fountain collection, renowned for its over 100 public fountains scattered throughout the city. Despite its age and prominence, the origins and purpose of this eerie statue remain shrouded in mystery.

Various theories have emerged to explain the statue’s symbolism. One unsettling interpretation suggests it served as a warning to the Jewish community, with the ogre’s pointed hat resembling traditional Jewish headwear. Alternatively, some believe it represents Cronos, the Greek god who feared his offspring would overthrow him, leading him to consume his children.

Another theory ties the statue to the founder of Bern, speculating that it symbolizes a vengeful older brother who, in jealousy, purportedly devoured the town’s children. Additionally, there are suggestions that the statue could represent Krampus, a folklore character associated with Santa Claus, known for disciplining misbehaving children during the holiday season.

Despite the numerous speculations, the true meaning behind the Kindlifresserbrunnen remains elusive. Nevertheless, the peculiar statue continues to captivate passersby, inviting them to ponder its enigmatic presence in the city’s landscape.
