Expert warns of ibuprofen risks for joint pain

Date:

A recent alert has been issued for the large number of individuals taking ibuprofen to alleviate joint pain or arthritis. This common painkiller is easily accessible without a prescription at retail stores nationwide and is among the most prescribed medications in the UK.

Ibuprofen is classified as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which functions by diminishing inflammation, swelling, and pain, leading to temporary improvement in comfort and mobility.

According to Anthony Paul Smith, a Musculoskeletal Postgraduate Lecturer at the University of Essex, while ibuprofen can alleviate symptoms, it does not target the fundamental joint changes linked with arthritis, such as cartilage degradation, bone alterations, and joint inflammation. Some individuals may become dependent on ibuprofen without exploring alternative pain management methods like exercise, weight loss, and physiotherapy, which are critical for long-term joint health.

Anthony emphasized that although ibuprofen is easily obtainable, its availability does not equate to safety. He explained that prolonged ibuprofen use poses risks of stomach irritation, potentially causing damage to the stomach lining and increasing the likelihood of ulcers and internal bleeding, especially with higher doses, extended usage, and in individuals over 65 years old.

Furthermore, ibuprofen can have detrimental effects on the kidneys by impeding healthy blood flow necessary for proper kidney function, potentially leading to kidney injury or exacerbating existing conditions, such as chronic kidney disease or heart disease. Long-term NSAID use has also been linked to elevated blood pressure, fluid retention, and increased heart complication risks in certain patients.

Individuals with asthma need to be cautious, as some may be sensitive to NSAIDs like ibuprofen, experiencing wheezing or breathing difficulties due to alterations in natural body chemicals that aid in keeping airways open.

Anthony cautioned against combining ibuprofen with other medications, as it can heighten the risk of complications or diminish the efficacy of other drugs. He stressed the importance of consulting a healthcare provider before engaging in regular, long-term ibuprofen use.

There are alternative methods for managing pain, inflammation, and limited mobility, such as engaging in physical activities like exercise, which can strengthen muscles around painful joints, reduce pressure, enhance movement, and alleviate symptoms over time. Weight management is crucial, particularly for knee and hip pain, as it can alleviate stress and inflammation on the joints.

Additionally, physiotherapy can assist individuals in enhancing strength, mobility, and confidence while learning safe strategies to handle flare-ups. Many GP practices in the UK offer access to NHS First Contact Physiotherapists, who can evaluate joint pain without requiring a prior GP visit.

Other strategies for managing joint pain include pacing activities, heat therapy to relax muscles and reduce stiffness, wearing supportive footwear, and utilizing anti-inflammatory gels applied to the skin to alleviate symptoms with fewer systemic side effects compared to oral tablets.

Anthony emphasized that while ibuprofen may have a role in pain management for some individuals, it is essential to view pain management as a holistic approach that balances symptom relief with long-term health and functionality.
