“Exploring Romania’s Scenic Transilvanica Trail at 32”

Date:

Reaching the age of 32 is a milestone for many, but celebrating it by embarking on a hiking adventure in Romania is truly unique.

The Transilvanica Trail, often referred to as Romania’s version of the popular Camino de Santiago in Spain, spans 1,400 kilometers from Putna to Drobeta Turnu Severin, showcasing the diverse landscapes of the country.

Although the entire Via Transilvanica route is extensive, my personal journey covered a shorter segment guided by Intrepid Travel. Over five days, we tackled approximately 10 kilometers daily, offering a manageable yet fulfilling hiking experience.

Starting the day with an early morning wake-up call at a Stansted Airport hotel, the journey commenced in Cluj-Napoca with our guide, Raluca, leading the way.

Before hitting the trails, we indulged in traditional Romanian cuisine, savoring dishes like pepper and mushroom soup with sour cream and roast chicken with potatoes, setting the tone for a culinary exploration ahead.

Beginning our hike from Palma Pass checkpoint through picturesque spruce forests, the misty weather added a mystical aura to our trek. The first day’s 10-kilometer walk was both challenging and gratifying, instilling a sense of accomplishment.

A well-deserved lunch break at Popas la Cosma introduced us to local dairy delights crafted by shepherds, including a delightful spread of meats, cheeses, and delectable pancakes filled with sweet cheese and blueberries.

Transitioning to Sadova trailhead on the second day presented a more demanding 11-kilometer hike, intensified by sunny weather conditions. Despite the physical exertion, the scenic beauty and encounters with wildlife, like frogs and snakes, made the journey memorable.

After a rewarding day on the trails, we retired to Hotel Dorna in Vatra Dornei, a charming ski resort town, offering a relaxing evening in the serene surroundings.

On the third day, we explored the Mestecăni trailhead, discovering local souvenirs and enjoying a pleasant hike made easier by strengthened legs and the allure of the forest wildlife.

Our final day involved a return journey to Cluj-Napoca, where we indulged in a delightful pasta lunch before bidding farewell to the captivating landscapes and warm hospitality of Romania.

While the Via Transilvanica may not match the fame of established pilgrimage routes, its untouched beauty and tranquility offer a unique experience for intrepid travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Leaving Romania filled with lasting memories and a newfound appreciation for hiking holidays, the journey left a lasting impression, inspiring future explorations.
